Processed Meat and Poultry
Freezer storage can increase the shelf life of most processed meat and poultry products.
- Lunch meat: Lunch meats will last for 2 weeks in refrigerated storage, or 1-2 months in freezer storage.
- Bacon: Bacon will last for 1 week in refrigerated storage or 1 month in freezer storage.
- Sausage: Raw beef, pork, turkey, or chicken sausage will last for 1-2 days in refrigerated storage or 1-2 months in freezer storage.
- Hot dogs: Hot dogs will last for 1-2 weeks in refrigerator storage, or 1-2 months in freezer storage.
Ground Meat
Like processed meats, ground meats can benefit from freezer storage.
- Hamburger: Hamburger will last for 1-2 days in refrigerated storage, or 3-4 months in freezer storage.
- Ground meats (turkey, veal, pork, lamb): Ground turkey, veal, pork, and lamb will last for 1-2 days in refrigerated storage, or 3-4 months in freezer storage.
Fresh Meat
Fresh beef, lamb, veal, and pork can be preserved far longer in freezer storage than in refrigerated storage.
- Steaks: Steaks will last for 3-5 days in refrigerated storage, or 6-12 months in freezer storage.
- Chops: Chops will last for 3-5 days in refrigerated storage, or 4-6 months in freezer storage.
- Roasts: Roasts will last for 3-5 days in refrigerated storage, or 4-12 months in freezer storage.
Fresh Poultry
Fresh poultry lasts much longer in freezer storage than in refrigerated storage.
- Whole turkey or chicken: Whole turkey or chicken will last for 1-2 days in refrigerated storage, or 1 year in freezer storage.
- Turkey or chicken parts: Turkey or chicken parts will last for 1-2 days in refrigerated storage, or 9 months in freezer storage.
Fish and Shellfish
Freezer storage can prolong the shelf life of most seafood products.
- Lean fish: Lean fish will last for 1-2 days in refrigerated storage or 6-8 months in freezer storage.
- Fatty fish: Fatty fish will last for 1-2 days in refrigerated storage or 2-3 months in freezer storage.
- Shrimp, scallops, crawfish, and squid: Fresh mollusks and crustaceans will last for 1-2 days in refrigerated storage, ar 3-6 months in freezer storage.
- Cooked fish: Cooked fish will last for 3-4 days in refrigerated storage, or 4-6 months in freezer storage.
- Smoked fish: Smoked fish will last for 14 days in refrigerated storage, or 2 months in freezer storage.
