MNSHARP and Worker Safety in a Cold Storage Facility in Austin, MN

As a family-owned company that has provided cold storage services for over 100 years, Minnesota Freezer Warehouse Company (MFWC) understands the importance of creating a safe work environment and protecting its hard-working employees to the best of its abilities.

To uphold our own quality standards for worker safety and meet the requirements of the state, we adhere to all Minnesota Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (MNSHARP) and overall Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) regulations. MFWC works with global customers transporting and storing food products and other goods that require controlled environments. Our cold storage facility in Austin, MN, and in Albert Lea, MN, imports, stores, and exports goods from coast to coast and border to border. Our central location along major freight and rail lanes make an ideal safe haven for temporary to long-term storage of goods that will be distributed worldwide.

MNSHARP’s mission is to:

  1. guarantee workplaces are free from injury and illness to the greatest degree possible;
  2. uphold building spaces that are healthy and safe for workers;
  3. ensure injured workers are given treatment and benefits;
  4. support the chance for all workers to get apprenticeships and other resources for critical skill training;
  5. protect and provide qualifications for workers who inspect and build facilities; and
  6. establish with workers, potential employees, and all employers a complete understanding of rights, responsibilities, and roles in the workspace.

Our work with MNSHARP as well as our continually upheld worksite certifications make MFWC warehouses a safe space for workers and show a clear dedication to giving all workers as many opportunities as we can.

Cold Storage

As a cold storage facility, we meet those certifications with several practices and storage capabilities. Primarily, our climate-controlled storage facilities are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and AIB International (formerly the American Institute for Baking). We protect food products and workers from foodborne illness and other diseases with precise climate-control technology, create an unbroken cold chain during import and export via rail or freight, maintain rigorous inventory tracking systems that keep data current to-the-minute, offer specialty storage and packing services like load consolidation and individual case selection, and much more.

Our staff of warehouse technicians is given extensive training on working in cold storage environments, provided the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the job, offered opportunities for fork truck and other pallet mover certifications, and any other means that keep employees safe from injury and illness on the job in a sub-zero workspaces.

MFWC warehouses are clean and well lit, and we place a strong emphasis on maximizing our storage spaces to protect products from damage with potential exposure to the wrong temperatures. Implementing a firm storage system also keeps worker tools and other items out of the way, protecting our team from on-the-job accidents.
